  • 7 Days of Sweetness:
Jack Witschi's Sports Arena

#7:

Rare Vintage World Wide Wrestling Poster from legendary promoter Jack Witschi's that took place at the Providence Civic Center in the early 70's! This is the final piece in our "7 Days of Sweetness" and by far our favorite one of a kind item.
Not only is this a rare piece of wrestling history but also an incredible piece of Providence, Rhode Island History! .

In 1932, Ernest “Jack” Witschi purchased what was then just a hayfield off South Washington Street near Draper Avenue – just north of what is now the ramp to Interstate 295 south – and began staging open-air dances.

By 1934, Witschi began putting on his first wrestling matches, and for much of its nearly half-century existence, the arena was synonymous with wrestling. Or “wrassling,” as some skeptics called it, with a snicker.

Some of the most famous wrestlers of the day — Killer Kowalski, Gorgeous George, Dropkick Murphy (no, not the band), Bruno Sammartino — plied their trade there, sometimes officiated by Jack Dempsey, Max Baer, Two-Ton Tony Galento or Rocky Marciano.
