  • 'The Matrix Reloaded' (2003) Review:

This is a painful attempt at a continuation of an iconic sci-fi movie.

#Thematrix Reloaded is everything the first movie isn't. First of all, the characters, despite still badass and likeable, are just played as plot devices rather than living, real characters. It's like they full on embrace that they're just "programs." The genius world building and setting in the first movie is also just there as a plot device here. Seriously, #Reloaded feels like a below average action movie, just taking place in the #Matrix world. Because unfortunately, even the action is not at it's best. I mean, we have one or two REALLY great action sequences (the iconic chateau fight and the first bit of the Neo vs Smiths), but other than that, it's a slapstick CGI fest with little to no depth. While a sequel to 'The Matrix' should at least continue the legacy of the first and expand on the world, 'Reloaded' barely does anything to develop this world any further.
A few other things I liked were Zion, which here feels like an actual, live place, and the last act, particularly the great scene between Neo and the #Architect , where the conversation alone was really well handled and felt like it was something that came put of the first film. It is also proof that the directors actually put in a lot of effort in the movie, but unfortunately, the execution came off as rather terrible.
In conclusion, 'The Matrix Reloaded' is just a discount Matrix sequel. It uses the same characters and concepts but does very little with them, and just throws them into cartoonish, empty stories and dumb CGI battles.

Grade: D+
