  • #permafrost (frozen ground) in #arctic #alaska contains ancient stores of #carbon that, if thawed, can be released as #greenhousegases like #carbondioxide and #methane. Warmer temps, less sea ice, and summer storms increase coastal erosion rates (up to 20 meters/year at the site!), releasing permafrost soil to the ocean. Here, we drill permafrost cores to figure out what is entering the ocean, estimate carbon dioxide release to the atmosphere, and predict how erosion affects marine food webs.
