  • M17 - The Omega Nebula

#Messier17, also known as the #OmegaNebula or #SwanNebula, is one of the largest star-forming regions in the Milky Way galaxy. Located 5500 light years away from Earth, it is not far from the Eagle Nebula (M16) in the core of the Milky Way. At magnitude 6.0, it can be seen with the naked eye in dark skies, but is much better through binoculars or a telescope. M17 contains an open cluster of 35 hot, young stars which are responsible for the nebula’s glow. The cluster is only 1 million years old, which makes it one of the youngest known clusters in our galaxy.
I used some new image processing techniques on this one, including a new star reduction process in Photoshop. Previously, star reduction worked ok for me but also was affecting the look of my deep sky objects. I’m much happier with this new result as it only affects the stars and leaves the DSO alone, allowing me to have more freedom to adjust it on its own. It’s nice to go back and edit data from over the summer knowing that the winter objects are on their way!
