  • Reposted from @wandering.planet (@get_regrann) - For many years, in the minds of humanity only 6 planets existed: Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. As our instruments to explore the sky got better we discovered more planets: Uranus, Neptune, ... and Pluto. When I was a kid the Solar System had 9 planets.

But then something happened. Astronomers realized that there were other astronomical bodies similar to Pluto, and some of them were very close to Pluto's orbit. One of them, Eris, was found to be more massive than Pluto.

Astronomers asked themselves, are these new planets? what is a planet to begin with?

And so, during a meeting of the International Astronomical Union in 2006, astronomers chose the official definition of a planet. One of the characteristics of a planet is that it can clear its orbit with its gravity.

Pluto and these new discovered planet-like bodies had something in common: they were surrounded by a lot of stuff. They were sharing their orbits. Probably they are leftovers of the formation of planets that couldn't keep growing.

From that moment Pluto lost its status as a planet. Now we consider Pluto as a dwarf planet.
