🥃🥃HI-LO/LIFE/DEATH🥃🥃 I am so grateful that as a community we share little tips and tricks – this one came in handy from diabestie Meg to determine if a drink is ‘Diet’ or ‘Full Fat’. At the weekend a friend bought me what they thought would be a ‘Diet Coke’.
As soon as I took a sip I instantly knew it wasn’t right and I then remembered Meg had said an easy way to ‘test’ the drink to determine if it is ‘Full Fat’ is to stick a test strip in it like you would test your BGL.
To my horror the result returned a HI reading. Instead of getting angry and annoyed I decided it was an opportunity to go over with my monitor and show the bar tender the importance of the reading it had returned.
I explained the significance of someone ordering a ‘Diet Coke’ because of a genuine medical reasoning behind it instead of just drinking it because there are no calories in it. Equally if I had of wanted a ‘Full Fat’ coke to treat a hypo and had been served a ‘Diet Coke’ my condition would have deteriorated further and I would have been in an even worse state. She was a little horrified and apologised so maybe this will make her a little more careful when pouring drinks and maybe pass the knowledge onto others that she works with... it scares me a little to think that we put our lives in the hands of others by merely ordering a drink.... have any of you had a bad experience because of this? Is it time to maybe lobby to get this changed when people take their Liquor Licenses / RSL’s / Bar training so that they are aware of consequences of not actually serving someone what they have asked for?

Homebarawards September challenge is Single Malts! I’m excited about this one because while scotch cocktails have slowly been popping up on cocktail menus, I wish they had more of a spotlight. Scotch is a beautifully spirit to work with and I can’t wait to see what everyone else came up with for this month 🙌🏼
There’s a lot going on in this recipe, but when done right it’s a very intriguing, complex, and a delightful cocktail. Alter any one part of this recipe and the result could be catastrophic... maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration but still, balance is balance yo 😏!
•1.5oz Glenmorangie The Lasanta
•.5oz American Fruits Cherry Cordial
•.75oz Smoked Autumn Shrub*
•.25oz Cappelletti Apertivo
•1/8oz Allspice Dram
[Dry shake then shake with ice and double strain into a coupe]
•Garnish: Sprinkled Ground Allspice
*Smoked Autumn Shrub:
•1 cup Brown sugar
•1/3 cup Carrot juice
•2 Tbsp Unsalted butter
•Barspoon Sea salt
•1/2 A vanilla bean (sliced open to expose beans).
-Heat until butter and sugar dissolves then remove from heat.
-Fill glass container with Cherrywood smoke and close lid. Let sit for about one minute.
-Fine strain shrub into container filled with smoke.
•Add 2 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar and stir well to blend.
-Replace lid and let sit until room temperature.
