SCORPIO AND STRINGS
So last night was quieter, but it had the music of Brahms, Bach, and Berlin as well as the pounding beats of Berghain.
Not really, but we were with Tess Dizon de Vega, Philippine ambassador to Germany, whose birthday falls on the same day as mine, Nov. 10.
But that the stars chose to deliver us on earth on the same day is not all we have in common.
We met in Berlin while I was on vacation and she was two weeks into her post and I think we both regard the city the same way.
Berlin is not charming like Prague. It's not pretty like Paris. It's in fact relatively new, not as historic as Bavaria or Bohemia. It's not even as toxic as New York or Hong Kong or Manila, where I thrive.
But we love Berlin -- and for reasons we cannot easily pin down. I think it's the character, the echoes of its violent past with which burbles its unique, mystifying personality from beneath the surfaces. If I were a city, I'd like to be Berlin.
Also with us was @annalamentillo, chairperson of the DPWH's "Build Build Build" infrastructure program, so she brought with her the necessary noises of a city in pursuit of progress -- you know the jackhammers and the sledgehammers, the drills, tamping and welding and all, not to mention all the noises of opposition, objections, scrutinies, nitpicking at last night's budget hearing at the Senate.
But @dominicgaleon and I, we thrive in noises, so we asked the pianist and the violinist at the Champagne Room of the Manila Hotel to play John Williams' "Theme from Schindler's List," clamoring for the silences of Itzhak Perlman's violin, in honor of our woman in Berlin.
A haunting take on a terrible time in history. This Holocaust Memorial in Berlin consists of 2,711 concrete pillars that symbolize the feelings of isolation and loss when walking through the maze. We weren’t expecting to be so moved by the physical aspect of the memorial and definitely shared the empathy of those who have lost their lives. Racism is an endless battle that still exists in this day and age. May history never repeat itself as we are able to stride for the better of mankind ❤️ #neverforget#berlin#oct2019
These 4 days in #november1989 have been very special. After the historical #fallofthewall event it took almost a week for Berlin to get back to a reality beyond immediate concerns of how to regulate traffic for example. The outpour of #solidarity from the majority of citizens with „the other Germans“ was overwhelming and should be never forgotten. I am grateful to have been there and breathing the “winds of change” day and night, going back to my cold old flat with cole-oven (!) only to sleep a few hours and take a shower. .
It has been a pleasure sharing these memories with you. Thank You for listening. We will see, how the world will remember these days 20 years from now for the #fallofthewall50. .
