October reading announcement! The members have voted, and we’re excited to share that we’ll be looking at Octavia Butler’s tenth novel PARABLE OF THE SOWER, published in 1993 and the first in her two-book Earthseed series. If anyone would like to join, get in touch; our group is open to all self-identifying women and non-binary people. 🔹
October is Black History month, so to be reading Butler - who paved the way for African American science fiction authors - feels particularly important. Often described as ‘the great dame of science fiction’, Butler’s work has been categorised as Afrofuturism, with her work often revolving around multi-ethnic (or multi-species) worlds. Butler’s impact on the science fiction world is unmatched; a multiple recipient of the Hugo and Nebula awards, she was also the first SF writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship.🔹
Described by the New Yorker as ‘a prescient vision of a zealot elected to “Make America Great Again”’, Parable of the Sower is set in the 2020s, where society has largely collapsed due to climate change, growing wealth inequality, and corporate greed. The story is centred around a young woman named Lauren Oya Olamina who possesses what Butler dubbed hyperempathy or "sharing" – the ability to feel pain and other sensations she witnesses. As a teenager growing up in the remnants of a gated community near Los Angeles, she begins to develop a new belief system, which she comes to call Earthseed. #parableofthesower
Candace Owens is a college dropout who has never voted a day in her life. She is a sycophantic puppet and white supremacy apologist for racist conservatives pushing the narrative that racism in America is dead and gone. She is an expert at nothing other than foot shuffling and buck dancing and providing cover for white supremacy. Why the hell did Republicans call her as an “expert” to testify before Congress? Where was she educated? What does she have a degree in? What, in her 30 years, has she mastered, researched, become proficient at, or pioneered? #
Let’s be clear, Republicans have become masters at developing Black bootlickers to do their bidding, people who parrot their racist narrative, ostensibly to give credibility to their fictive reality of an America where Black people should no longer have a grievance as racism has been eradicated and they have received their due recompense for 400 years of slavery, oppression, degradation, murder, lynching, segregation, and brutalization. #
Sadly, Candace is at the top of the list of the well compensated, go to, backslapping adulators called upon to do massa’s bidding by erasing the history of anti-Black bigotry and oppression and placing the plight of the Black community squarely on the shoulders of Black people themselves for having fatherless homes, engaging in so-called ‘Black on Black crime,’ and aborting their children. According to the white supremacist narrative, this explains the extra judicial murder of Blacks by police, racial profiling, the disparate treatment of Blacks in the criminal justice system, the wage and education gaps, health disparities, and so many other factors that affirm racism’s existence and pervasiveness in America.
