FASCINATING!
I continued #nonfictionnovember with The Great Pretenders by Susannah Cahalan and I’m so glad that I did! .
.
Be warned: this book does NOT read like fiction. It is a very in depth, dense exploration of the landscape of our mental health system and institutions over time. Based on the cover one would perhaps expect a true story version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest, but don’t be fooled - this is less a story and more of an investigation in to one of the research papers that has in part shaped the current system we have today and an overall examination of how attitudes towards psychiatry have changed over time and the factors leading in to those changes.
.
.
I, for one, truly enjoyed this info-heavy book but I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have a strong interest in the topic of mental health. I’ve loved both of Susannah Cahalan’s books but they are very different. I can highly recommend her memoir, Brain On Fire, if you are looking for something that is reads more like fiction... I kinda feel like I just finished a thought-provoking elective college course.
.
.
Thank you to @grandcentralpub for my free copy and the opportunity to read this book. .

  • 👑📖 • Mary Magdalene, Bride in Exile by Margaret Starbird. Greek edition by @livanis.books • The controversy surrounding Mary Magdalene & her relationship to Jesus has gained widespread international interest since the publication of Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code, which specifically cites Margaret Starbird’s earlier works as a significant source. In Mary Magdalene, Bride in Exile Starbird examines the many faces of Mary Magdalene, from the historical woman who walked with Jesus in the villages of Judea to the mythic and symbolic Magdalene who is the archetype of the Sacred Feminine. Starbird reveals exciting new information about the woman who was the most intimate companion of Jesus & offers historical evidence that Mary was Jesus’ forgotten bride. Expanding on the discussion of medieval art and lore introduced in her bestselling book The Woman with the Alabaster Jar, Starbird sifts through the layers of misidentification under which the story of the Lost Bride of Christ has been buried to reveal the slandered woman & the “exiled” feminine principle. She establishes the identity of the historical female disciple who was the favored first witness of the Resurrection & provides an interpretation of Mary’s true role based on prophecy from the Hebrew scriptures & the testimony of the canonical gospels of Christianity. Balancing scholarly research with theological reflection, she takes readers deeper into the story & mythology of how Magdalene as the Bride embodies the soul’s own journey in its eternal quest for reunion with the Divine © mortisia • .

  • It’s my first official @night_worms review and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.
.
I haven’t read a ton of westerns but when I do, it’s an adventure I usually enjoy. But this one is a bit different in every aspect - it’s a strange combination of western, horror, and folklore. I cannot stress this enough: I am obsessed with this story and every single one of its characters.
.
“This, this… person was carved from bad dreams. He was a quilt of scary stories and fearsome fables. Stitched in scars and ratty whiskers.”
.
WALK THE DARKNESS DOWN by John Boden is a dense book. It’s only 154 pages, but it’s all grit. I couldn’t just speed read it; I had to pace myself to let it all sink in.
.
We follow four distinct characters: Jones who seeks vengeance; Keaton and Jubal who are looking for a fresh start; and Levi, who is a loathsome, grotesque character that I kind of adore. He might even be one of my favorite villains in any story I’ve ever read. They all take their own journey, but inevitably cross paths to the most unexpected and repulsive, yet brilliant, ending.
.
When we start reading, the pace is slow and steady. The desolate, western atmosphere is a character in the story and sets the mood for what’s to come. The chapters are short, but the content is heavy. As we switch perspectives between Jubal and Keaton, or Jones, or Levi we start to put the pieces together, but we never quite know what’s in store until Boden intends us to. Every word, every sentence is deliberate.
.
As the story goes, the land all around is aflame and everything and everyone is in harm’s way, but it’s up to these characters to find the answers. I am not going to go into further detail, but even the lesser, side characters pack a big punch.
.
Boden’s writing is true poetry. I highlighted quote after quote because I couldn’t get enough. Yes, this is horror, but it’s also a story, a quest, and even though there are fantastical, horrifying elements, you will get invested in WALK THE DARKNESS DOWN.
.
I’m very grateful to @shineynobuttons @mother.horror and @pageandparlor for taking me on this adventure. ★★★★★ It’s my first official @night_worms review and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. . ~REVIEW🖋~
⏳The Quick and Dirty: A fun novella that introduces readers to Jenna Hartley’s new series Love in LA. An age gap, art professor/student romance. -
.
Kate’s wealthy (and snobbish) parents have no idea she’s attending art school and not med school. Xander is an artist that has had an accident that has left him at once uninspired and frustrated with his inability to paint in the same manner he once did. The two meet during a course where Xander is acting as a substitute teacher and the students are painting a nude model: Kate. Sparks fly and Xander realizes that Kate inspires something in him that makes him want to try to create again. As their relationship grows into something more, things get complicated when Kate’s parents find out the secret she’s been keeping. -
.
I love the dynamic between Xander and Kate. They just fit together so well. 💗While this novella is an age gap romance, it’s more of the sweet variety; the story isn’t dark or twisted at all. That’s not to say there isn’t some 🔥. It’s a solid contemporary romance novella that was quick and easy; perfect as a weekend read. -

🌙 Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren🌙

When she was 18-years old, Tate and her grandmother took a trip to London after her high school graduation. There they met grandfather and grandson duo, Luther and Sam. Sam had just turned 21-years old and completely captivated Tate’s attention. After their grandparents went to sleep, every night for two weeks, Tate and Sam would lay out on the grass in the hotel garden and stare at the stars. They’d share their deepest secrets and private thoughts that they didn’t want anyone else to know. And that’s where Tate gave her whole heart to Sam. But at the end of their trip, Sam betrayed Tate and left her completely heartbroken. 🌙
Now 14-years later, Tate is an actress, just like she always dreamed of. She’s about to start filming for a new movie called Milkweed. When she arrives on set, she’s shocked to discover the screenwriter for the film is Sam, the same Sam that tore her to pieces. The same Sam she hasn’t been able to forget. And now for weeks, Tate and Sam will be forced to work together. Tate’s been begging her heart to forget about Sam, but now that he’s right in front of her, she realizes her heart won’t be complete without him. 🌙
Twice in a Blue Moon is a second chance romance by one of my favorite author duos, Christina Lauren. This book was broken up into two sections: the first third took place 14-years ago and the remainder took place present day. I loved the past chapters so much and absolutely adored the young-love relationship between Tate and Sam. The current timeline had so much potential but it wasn’t flushed out enough. There wasn’t much of a romance at all in the current timeline and I ended up feeling disappointed.
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • How is everyone doing on their November reads?
~~~
I think we are entering that time of year where it can be hard to give much time to things like reading. People are busy! I did finish hosting my first buddy read with an awesome group of #bookstagrammers! It was also my first Stephen King novel and it worked great for group discussion. I had a LOT of theories and almost none were right. I really enjoyed the characters and I loved how two seemingly separate stories wove together.
~~~
#TheInstitute tells the story of Luke, a child genius, who is kidnapped and wakes up in a place called The Institute. It seems that all of the kids there have some special abilities, enhanced by tests the staff run on them. Tokens are doled out for good behavior, but punishments are severe for acting out. As kids disappear from the Institute to “back half”, Luke is determined to escape and get help. Only no one has ever escaped from The Institute before...
~~~
I promise this book is more suspense than scary! Many of our group don’t like scary books but loved this one. I highly recommend it!
Ketemu lagi di hari ke-4 review buku ‘Ya Allah, Izinkan Kami Menjadi Birrul Walidain’. Sekarang aku ingin membagi puisi favorit menurut versiku. Dari 26 puisi, jujur hanya satu puisi yang memikat hatiku. Traalaaaa.. Puisi siapakah? ‘Nelangsa’ karya Kak @_adistyputri .  Kenapa aku suka? Diksi jelas oke tapi sudut pandang yang diambil penulis beda. Semua puisi lainnya mengambil sudut pandang anak tapi puisi Kak @_adistyputri mengambil sudut pandang ibu. Sesuai judul, duh aura nelangsanya benar-benar kerasa menyayat hati. Ga percaya? Simak puisi Kak @_adistyputri di bawah ini.⁣
Nelangsa⁣
⁣
Nelangsa⁣
Senja⁣
Menatap Keranda⁣
Menitikkan air mata⁣
⁣
Sepi⁣
Dan sendiri⁣
Sunyi⁣
Lalu mati⁣
⁣
Si tua bercita⁣
Meski hati berduka⁣
Permata bersemuka belahan jiwa⁣
Lupa Mahkota⁣
Lena Surga⁣
⁣
Lirih tanya dalam dada⁣
Tanpa pernah siapa mendengarnya⁣
“Bunda menua dengan siapa jika ananda pamit dari Istana?”⁣
