In 2013, Kaneko started production of the Couple Series with the theme of “relationships” and since then has expanded the series in broad-ranging media including sculpture, paintings, and drawings. He captures relationships as the “change triggered by the connection between things or events,” and visualizes such complicated states as “entanglement.” The entanglement manifested in the Couple Series was inspired by the sexual loving so sensuously depicted in shunga woodblock prints. Shunga, literally spring pictures, is a type of erotic ukiyo-e and a traditional Japanese art. The artist has particularly directed his attention to the entangled limbs so characteristic of shunga. He jubilantly quotes the entanglement of hands and feet, and limbs and bodies in shunga, and reconsiders the magnificent meaning contained in “relationship” and thereby continues exploring the beauty of the word.

  • shame on you @lara.spencer @goodmorningamerica . I am a mom of a ballet dancer that works her butt off 6 days a week, hours a day. I have the honor of being a highly involved volunteer at the dance studio my daughter performs at which has given me the ability to get to know each and every dancer and watch their hard work and growth and and sees the sweat and tears they all put into their craft. I am a photographer that tries her damndest to capture the strength, commitment, emotion, power, discipline and realness it takes to be a ballet dancer in the photos that I take. Do you know how many days a week and hours per day these kids put in to perfect their craft and, on top of that, continue to go to school? Do you know how many activities they choose to miss out on? Do you know how many late nights they are staying up to do their homework? Do you know how much passion they have? Do you know how much physical pain they are in? Do you know how strong they are? Do you know that shaming a young boy that loves ballet not only destroys their self-worth, but also continues this horrible stigma that showing your emotions is wrong and that they are weak? That is so far from the truth. They are 100 times stronger than you or me: emotionally and physically. It should be embraced and celebrated that dancers, regardless of gender, put everything they have into doing what they love, and most definitely should have been celebrated by YOU because of the platform you hold. YOU could have taken that moment to commend him for his love of ballet. YOU could have thanked his parents for supporting their young son in his development to being a good, thoughtful, strong human. But you chose to laugh and make fun, which, is something you should seriously reflect on. Why did you fell the need to prepare and present your "pop news story" this way. shame on you @lara.spencer @goodmorningamerica .
