Away swing: The art of controlling the game
As a professional bowler you become more valuable if you are able to control the game.
This means landing enough balls in the right area to bring the run rate down. By bringing the run rate down you also put the batsmen under pressure which result in more false shots and your team can also get more wickets by slowing down the scoring.
For this to happen you need a couple of assets:
1. The ability to repeat your action, this helps you to repeat landing the ball in the right area.
2. You need the skills to move the ball as this creates doubt in the batsmen’s mind.
3. You need a clear plan and field placing.
For me the away swinger is a key delivery to comtrol the game. Here your line is very important. With a new ball that swings a lot you want to start the ball on middle and offstump so that the batsmen plays at it but not enought width for him to have a go at.
As the ball get older over nr 20-40 you want to bowl 6/7 stump line with an offside field. Important is that you keep a good length as this is still the most difficult ball to hit amd now the batsmen will play away from his body if he aims to drive.
In a oneday game the same very often applies, the only difference is that in the last few over you would want to get it really full which will force the batsmen to hit on the offside but also not allowing him to get under the ball.
