  • It's #WorldHumanitarianDay! This year the focus is on celebrating and strengthening the role of #WomenHumanitarians. We want to share the story of Julia from Mozambique. After the cyclone hit her town, Julia volunteered to join Oxfam's emergency response: “I volunteered because this is my country. I am from the city of Beira, so when the cyclone hit I was here. It was very, very bad. Lots of things were destroyed. Houses were destroyed, the roads were blocked with trees and other things. It was like waking up in the morning and not realising that this was my neighbourhood because everything was changed.” In the aftermath of Cyclone Idai, Oxfam and the Ministry of Health trained 161 community ‘activistas’ to promote public health advice to help stop the spread of cholera. Julia joined Oxfam as one of these ‘activistas’ doing household visits and chlorine distribution in Praia Nova, a poor area in Beira that had been hit hardest.

Please consider donating at teamrubiconuk.org

In a rare moment of quiet as they waited for a helicopter pick-up, Mike was joined by a little boy who wanted Mike to read his book to him. The book was about dinosaurs but the little boy kept telling Mike and Keith that they were crocodiles! (Which also makes you wonder about the size of crocs in Mozambique!) We love this photo and how disaster relief is more than just delivering vital supplies but about relationships, empathy, compassion and taking a moment to read a story to a little boy who has witnessed so much devastation 🐊🦕🦖#disasterrelief #TeamRubicon #Mozambique #CycloneIdai On #worldhumanitarianday and every day, we could not be more proud, as greyshirts, to be a small part of @teamrubiconuk - the incredible organisation making a real difference to those in times of crisis. • Today I travelled to areas in manicaland that were affected by #CycloneIdai. What pervades my mind the most at this point is the impermanence of life. Nothing in life is truly guaranteed. Not your life...not the roof above your head...not the sky above you or even the limbs you think you own. With that in mind, to what end are you living? Are you really living and making a difference or you're merely existing and making another simple statistic? #thoughts #life #philosophy Today I travelled to areas in manicaland that were affected by #cycloneidai. "Pictured is Amina, a young girl from #Mozambique. She is one of the nearly 1.8 million people dependent on humanitarian aid since #CycloneIdai made landfall last March. “We did not expect the cyclone. It was night and we were sleeping. At first, we woke up to the sound of the wind and right after that the water came streaming into our house. It’s the planting season now and we don’t have seeds. Soon we will all be hungry," says Rafael Domingo, Amina's father. ⁣
Our colleagues from the International Migration Organization (IOM) have been working to support those affected by the cyclone since it hit the region, which is a major corridor for migrants transiting from the Horn of Africa to South Africa. ⁣
