The 1991 Land Rover Defender 110 is one of the most truly capable vehicles Land Rover has ever built. The newly introduced 200Tdi engine, which was a 2.5 liter, turbocharged, direct injected, intercooled (Tdi) diesel in-line four, was relatively powerful, reliable, and efficient in comparison to the engines which had come before it. With 107 horsepower and 188lb/ft of torque, the Defender could now be driven like a normal car (in early 90’s England, mind you) and haul with greater gusto. Naturally, the newly christened “Defender” was and remains one of the most factory-capable off road vehicles of all time, a title it vies for with the likes of the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It’s a go-anywhere vehicle for commerce or adventure, equally at home on safari or working the farm. There’s a new Defender waiting in the wings, and of all the hotly anticipated reveals this year (Supra, Corvette, Bronco, etc), the new Defender may have the biggest shoes to fill, and given the recent state of Jaguar/Land Rover, the most riding on its shoulders.
