  • On this #medalmonday I’m sharing my medals earned from my second 50 mile race on Saturday. While I placed 2nd female, 6th overall finisher and ran it with a time of 8:33 this was far from a picture perfect race. I needed to be to my bus shuttle at 3:30am, but my hotel was an hour away, so I woke up 1:30am. The bus ended up being late and we started 2 hours late, leaving my stomach a tad emptier than usual at the start. I began, knowing the first 19 miles were all a steady grade downhill. I kept it controlled and comfortable, but my pace was still faster than I anticipated. I ran the first 6 miles with the gal who took first and we chatted during that time. After the first aid station, her and I separated with me taking the lead. Up until mile 20 her and I kept going back and forth on leading. At that point, I eased on pace feeling the strain and pull of the uphill and let her go on ahead. All I wanted was to hit my goal time. Around mile 23, my stomach started turning and I needed a restroom and FAST! I was forced to use Mother Nature as my toilet. Upon hitting mile 25 I had to yet again use the restroom. At mile 28 we started the downhill grade again and I switched gears to make up for lost time. By mile 33 my quads were hurting so badly they were practically screaming at me to stop. My stomach was in distress and my legs were ready to give out which nearly led me to throw in the towel. At mile 35 I hit the aid station before the 10 mile steady climb uphill and caught a second wind. Just after mile 44 we started the downhill. All was going well until midway through mile 48... my legs did not want to run anymore. More run/walk combos as I came into the finish. As with any race, I will pick this one apart and see all the things I did wrong instead of what I did right. I could have done this, should have done that and the what if’s are always there. I shared my splits and marked the aid station stops. Overall, pretty satisfied that I was able to regain pace after those long, steady climbs. .
