Frontal plane instability with a sagittal plane medicine ball slam 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 this is much harder than he’s making it look! This requires significant coordination, core control, co-contraction of hip stabilizer muscles and proprioception.

How does this benefit him? By mastering this challenge, Mack is learning to activate and co-contract his core and leg muscles simultaneously to create stability in an unstable environment. Then when he returns to a stable environment he is able to increase motor unit recruitment and core activation which ultimately results in increased strength, power and function.

This exercise is designed to eccentrically overload the hamstrings and glute, with an added challenge of instability on the @bosu_fitness ball. The medicine ball slam helps overload the eccentric (lengthening) component, and also provides an additional perturbation to further challenge the balance and proprioception.

  • THIS IS WHAT WE TRAINED FOR!! I was stoked to see my guy @jwat14 make his first post-ACL-comeback interception in the @chargers @saints game yesterday! Swipe through to see it and how it all ties together!

After surgery it’s common for athletes to lose confidence in the operative leg with return to jumping, cutting and hitting in real time game situations. In order to restore his confidence during the end of the rehab process we performed the above exercises to simulate on field demands of focusing on the ball and landing in awkward positions, jumping over fallen players and even being hit and knocked off balance by other players.
