I am endlessly fascinated with the relationship between glucose regulation and skin health, and I want to share it with you! So here’s a little video (tried to make it short but ended up waxing poetic for 9 minutes 🙄- skip to ~2.5 min in to get to the glucose part!). If you are in any way interested in preventing— or even potentially REVERSING— WRINKLES or other skin conditions, watch this!! It’s not about what you put on the surface (creams, injectables, etc), it’s about what’s going on on the INSIDE - aka physiology! I talk a lot about the process of glycation in this video, but didn’t even mention how glucose also impairs vascular/endothelial function, meaning that it can reduce blood flow to the skin, leading to a whole host of aesthetic issues, which no cream or injection can really counteract. And the good things is there is so so much we can do to optimize our cellular function with the right knowledge, data, and biofeedback. .
.
.
My passion about the relationship between metabolic health and how excess glucose wreaks havoc on all aspects of health has led me to work with a groundbreaking company that is making incredible software to help individuals use continuous glucose data as a powerful tool to increase health and wellness/ check it out at www.levelshealth.com and let me know if you have questions about anything in my video. .
.
.
🍽🍽🍽Also- why did I post this photo of this DELICIOUS tofu scramble with black beans, onions, 🥑 , fennel, and 🌶 ?! Because this epic meal raised by blood less than 10 points!!! (Which I knew it would, because I’ve tested my response to all these foods with my continuous glucose monitor, so there are very few surprises these days!). in contrast, just for comparison, plain oatmeal raises my glucose 65+ points, so no more of that for me. #precisionmedicine#wrinkles#organic#acne#functionalmedicine#doctorsofinstagram#eattolive#cleaneating#mealprep#detox#nutrition#vegetables#vegetarian#foodismedicine#vegansofig#functionalfoods#antiinflammatory#guthealth#eattolive#healingfoods#foodasmedicine#wholefoodsplantbased#foodismedicine#healthyfood#healthylifestyle#data#glucose#cgm#freestylelibre
Sweet life. Part 3.
What is the difference between processed sugar and natural sugar?
🍬
Refined sugar comes from sugar cane or sugar beets, which are both processed to extract the sugar. Usually, this sugar is a combination of Glucose and Fructose, called Sucrose.
🍏
Natural sugar—the sugar that comes from fruit—is packaged with fiber, water, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phtytonutrients as well as other nutrients that improve your health.
🍫
Refined sugar (such as candy and cakes) has no fiber to slow down its absorption, so it enters the blood stream very quickly, causing a “sugar rush” followed by a “sugar crash”. It takes you from the sky high energy to rock bottom energy as fast as it did 30 minutes ago when first you bit your blissful sugary piece.
🍑
Natural sugar provides a longer source of energy without crashes. Natural sugar comes in fruit—and fruit is a good source of fiber, which slows down the digestion of glucose so you don’t get the energy high/insulin spike. Fruit also contains water, which helps to prevent dehydration and the tired, drained feeling that comes when blood-sugar dips.
🍭
If only it were that easy to sub your favorite empty calorie candy with a cup of fresh blueberries; there would be no phenomenons like sugar addiction. 🍊
The good news is that addictions, like sugar addiction, can be cured. 🥥
Doctors have said that it takes six weeks without processed sugar to reprogram your taste buds.
🍒
If sugar addiction is something that bothers you, give it a try, just make sure you have a balanced and nutritious diet to deal with the cravings.
🍓
But if you can control your sugar intake, enjoy your sweet life.
🍉
P.S. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amounts of added sugar we should eat per day are: Men: 9 teaspoons; Women: 6 teaspoons.

Don’t be fooled - these 2 pastas have the same amount of calories but the nutritional content is very different!⠀
⠀
Barilla pasta is made from refined flour – which means it is highly processed and completely stripped of its nutrient value with virtually NO vitamins, minerals or fiber. The high amount of carbs and low amount of fiber means it is HIGH GLYCEMIC and it will affect blood sugar levels! Also, it’s full of GLUTEN which is inflammatory and can cause stomach discomfort & weight gain!⠀
⠀
Banza pasta is made from chickpeas (and it only has 3 ingredients total!) – It has LESS carbs and MORE fiber, which means it's LOW GLYCEMIC. It packs a ton of protein to keep you feeling satisfied, too! Plus, it’s NATURALLY gluten free!⠀
⠀
Here are some quick tips when buying items based on their nutrition labels:⠀
• Aim for 4 or more grams of fiber (5 or more is AWESOME). Anything less than 4 grams of fiber is HIGH glycemic which you want to avoid to prevent blood sugar crashes!⠀
• Aim for less than 5 grams of sugar (less than 2 is AWESOME. If there’s more than that, where is the sugar coming from? Is it naturally sweetened or artificially?)⠀
• Aim for 5 or less ingredients (to minimize the amount of “processed” foods) and only buy items with an ingredient list where you can pronounce each ingredient or know what each ingredient is⠀
• Avoid items with artificial ingredients, chemicals, preservatives, etc!
Do you drink orange juice? There are many reasons why you should think again … and possibly just eat an orange instead. This is the case even if you have ‘real’ orange juice. I recommend coming along to one of our sugar talks to find out why.
For a quick answer now, part of the fibre of the orange is lost in the juicing process and this has a significant impact on how the glucose (part of the sugar in the orange) is absorbed into your bloodstream. The different way it is absorbed can have a significant impact on your blood glucose/sugar response.
Don’t believe me? Have a large orange juice on an empty stomach and see if you are hungry 2 hours later. If you are, and you are someone who often gets hungry, then you should think about getting some personalised nutrition advice as there's a good chance you would benefit from it. A week off training, Did anything negative happen? 🧐
__
Not really...
__
After having a week off the gym but still consuming the same foods as before, not alot has changed, however...
__
Studies state you can lose up to 11% muscle size in just 10 days without exercise?
__
This isn't because of muscle loss it's due to the fact your muscle glycogen levels and water stores have dropped.. (in other words your muscle energy storage hasn't been used for the past few days so there's no need to store even more unused energy in the muscle)
__
As for the "pump" your muscles get after a workout, that is also down to the muscle glycogen and water stores, which can increase the size of the muscle by upto 16%! (Instagram picture time) 😏

What do you now about #glucose#biosensors?
Glucose comes from the Greek word for "sweet." It's a type of sugar you get from foods you eat, and your body uses it for energy. As it travels through your bloodstream to your cells, it's called blood glucose or blood sugar. Insulin is a hormone that moves glucose from your blood into the cells for energy and storage. Glucose oxidase is one of the possible enzymes that a biosensor can use. Biosensors work by keeping track of the number of electrons that pass through the enzyme by connecting it to an electrode and measuring the resultant charge. ... One type of biofuel cell uses enzymes as a biocatalyst.A Biosensor is an analytical device. The sensor which integrates the biological elements with the Physiochemical transducer to produce an electronic signal is proportional to a single analyte and which is fetched into a detector

I traveled to the stroma where the energy carrying molecules from the light dependent reaction made sugar (glucose) The ATP and NADPH that produce 3-c sugars from CO2 and H+ from water powered this reaction which is also called a “Calvin Cycle.” The cycle happened twice to make glucose! #glucose#independentreactions

Do you swap #sugar for #sucralose in your tea or #coffee, and think you're being healthy? Not so. This popular artificial sweetener is definitely NOT the best option. It is, in fact, a toxic chlorocarbon on account of the sugar bound to the chlorine.
Effects: Affects the absorption of nutrients.
Decreases the good bacteria in your intestines.
Negatively affects your well-being.
What should you have: #stevia -- which will not have a negative impact on your blood #glucose or #insulin levels.

Stabilizing your glucose (and therefore insulin) is an important part of staying healthy! But here’s what you may not have known - ANYONE can have glucose issues, not just diabetics!
Ever been really tired so you reach for a snack, some sugar, or some caffeine to keep you going? Then 3 hours later you crash and burn HARD and have to grab the same junky boost to keep yourself awake? Familiar with the 3:00 slump? HELLO UNBALANCED GLUCOSE!! Yep, if you’re on a roller coaster ride of energy, chances are you need glucose stabilization! You need chromium!
This wonderful little mineral found in many plants, can naturally regulate your insulin and blood glucose. And instead of eating 9 cups of broccoli a day (to get the amount you need to regulate insulin) you could just drink this tasty little pink drink once a day!
Game changer! So... what are you waiting for? .

Do I have to give up ice cream?
Do I have to give up Starbucks?
Do I have to give up candy?
Do I have to give up pizza?
Do I have to give up soda?
Do I have to give up brownies?
Do I have to give up nachos?
Do I have to go on a #diet? ✨ The answer is “nooooo”! ✨
HOWEVERRRRRR ... Once you get your #glucose levels a little more balanced, you will find that your cravings for unhealthy foods will CHANGE ... it’s just the way the body was created to work!
There’s PROOF that regulating our #bloodsugar actually gives our brains self-control over sugar & carb cravings, which is FABULOUS - especially during the holidays!! 📉 A study by scientists from Yale University revealed that "A drop in glucose levels leads to the brain losing self-control over food consumption.” So, maybe you’ll wanna take charge of your cravings by balancing your blood sugar a bit. Other side-effects include: natural #energy, leveling your #moods, and fat loss! 😍) ⚖️ Balancing our bodies is the most important thing we can do. Once glucose levels are balanced, cravings are put in CHECK! THEN, the body sends messages to the brain telling it what it really NEEDS and WHEN!
Don’t let cravings stress you out and run your life anymore. Treat yourself because you can, NOT because you can’t stop.

At the @amsnmedsurg convention, held recently in Chicago, 6 North Clinical Leader Jessica Ollis, BSN, RN, and staff nurse Kimberly Danna, RN, presented their poster “Narrowing the Gap Between Insulin Dosing and Glucose Monitoring” during the exhibit session.
The poster is the result of an evidence-based project aimed at reducing the time between #glucose point-of-care testing (POCT) and administration of pre-breakfast insulin to less than or equal to 60 minutes, which is the recommended national standard. On 6 North, the project resulted in several practice changes that have brought the average time from POCT and pre-breakfast insulin administration to only 25 minutes. “Our results are truly phenomenal,” says Ollis. “We could not be prouder of all the staff on 6 North!”

What are YOU taking post-workout?
.
For the most part, you understand protein is an extremely important macronutrient to have in your day and after workout.. but did you know post-workout carbohydrates are more important than protein itself after a resistance based workout? In reality... you need a combination of both!
.
When you workout under high intensity or resistance, two things happen:
🔺Muscle Glycogen stores are depleted
🔺Muscle tissue undergoes micro-trauma
.
Now any carbohydrate can benefit you, but truly what your body wants is speed! I HIGHLY recommend a post-workout glucose, like pictured above. Your body does not have to break down a glucose for it is a sugar molecule in its simplest form! This means your muscle glycogen stores are replenished rapidly, so the amino acids from your hydrolyzed whey protein isolate can do its job and begin to repair your muscle tissue😎
.
This simple change long term will make a MASSIVE impact on your ability to recover and build muscle. If you have any questions, please reach out. We are here to serve you 🙌

Immediately I was directed to sit down at the brain to fill out documents, then be interviewed with the CEO of the “brain” to tell the responsibilities I require to give working as an ATP molecule. Fast forward to now, I got accepted into the department to take action as an ATP, releasing energy throughout the body. The daily average I work is 1000 to 15000 times per day, to use my speciality to recycle some of the molecules. But an example, is a reaction of breaking down glucose, which releases energy that cells need to carry out life . The endothermic in organisms maintains a constant body temperature of an indecent environment. #endothermic#glucose#releasesenergy

My first Pre-Bolus!
A pre-bolus is when you give yourself insulin before you eat. You need to consider the carbs in the food, your carb-insulin ratio, and your actual glucose. So, it’s an art.
First, I was using Humalog Mix 25 Insulin, that worked throughout the day, but maintain me in a strict food and diet regime (see the chart)because of the active insulin spikes, which caused many hypos.
Now, I am using the long acting and fast acting insulin that it’s more similar to the work that the pancreas does. And... this was the result! Beautiful semi-unicorn after an hour and a half.
