  • #TheDarkKnightRises came out seven years ago today. This movie is also the reason why I quit my job to pursue filmmaking more actively!

I was watching it (for about the fifth time since it's release) a year or two ago, when this scene hit me like it never had before. #BruceWayne has been placed within this hellish prison, which is just a giant pit, so that the bad guy #Bane can destroy #GothamCity without him there to stop him. Many people have attempted to climb out of the pit with only one person making it out successfully before, a small child. There's a bunch of handholds and ledges, as well as a rope that the prisoners could tie around their waist to catch them if they fall. Bruce made several unsuccessful attempts, falling each time he tried to make this particular jump from one ledge to another, with the rope catching him and preventing him from falling to his death. Eventually, an old prisoner told him how to make the climb:
Prisoner: "How can you move faster then possible, fight longer then possible, without the most powerful impulse of the spirit? The fear of death."
Bruce:"I do fear death. I fear dying in here while my city burns. And there's no one there to save it."
Prisoner: "Then make the climb."
Bruce: "How?"
Prisoner: "As the child did - without the rope. Then fear will find you again." This last time watching the movie, I knew what my prison was and I knew what my rope was. My prison was my job and the rope was my paycheck. I knew that in order to get out of my current situation, I had to "lose the rope." And the prisoner in the movie was right—fear sure did find me again! Just the very thought of quitting my job TERRIFIED me!

And I don't think that fear ever goes away. I think it's how we respond to it that matters. We can either have it in front of us, paralyzing us and keeping us stuck; or, we can move through it, having it now behind us to motivate us and propel us forward. But we first have to make the jump—without the rope. 😉
