FBF "He moves in space with minimum waste and maximum joy”. 33 years ago today Sade released "Smooth Operator" Sept 15th 1984 ~ the third single from the amazing Diamond Life album.
I had signed a publishing deal earlier that year with Sade and the band: Sade, Stuart, Paul, Andrew; and this album, this single and the enigmatic quality of their brand; the total class attached to everything they touched was an incredible experience for me and an amazing boost to my business profile in my first year in the US; having spent the first 14 years of my career in London.
I was honored to work with them on publishing the songs they wrote on their first four brilliant albums “Diamond Life”, “Promise”, “Stronger Than Pride” and “Love Deluxe” both at Famous Music/Paramount Pictures (from ’84 to ’90 where I first signed them) and then at my own indie publishing company SDM/Plaything Music in the early 90’s. I remember calling Sade at her home in London in April 1990 to tell her that I was leaving Famous Music to start my own business and she immediately responded “can we come with you?” Such a wonderful vote of confidence and an incredible start to my new indie venture!
Grammy Awards, ASCAP Awards, American Music Awards with Michael Jackson and George Michael, George Michael post AMA birthday party ... all Sade related. Fond memories ….. stronger than pride :-) #sade #stuartmatthewman #andrewhale #pauldenham #smoothoperator #diamondlife #strongerthanpride #promise #lovedeluxe #grammyawards #bestnewartist #ascapawards #americanmusicawards #ama #georgemichael #michaeljackson
