  • Public behavior around dogs continues to astonish me. .

I was training with @workingk9.karma yesterday at the mall, practicing cross-recalls with the dogs. They were doing really well! Until, of course, this man approached Wally, in a down-stay, completely away from me, and started kissing at and reaching for him. I yelled “Hey!” and rushed over. .
“Excuse you! No, absolutely not. Do not pet without asking.”
.

He looked at me, said, “Oh, okay,” and reached down again to pet Wally.

This time, I crouched over my dog, stuck my hand under his, and stared him straight in the face. “No.” He stood up, taken aback, and walked away. .

Wally is incredibly friendly. He LOVES strangers. So, rather than expect every person to keep their hands to themselves and their dogs’ flexis locked in a short enough distance for proper boundaries (which we all know isn’t going to happen), I teach my insanely friendly dog to prioritize the command I give him, and my continued direction, over his own instantaneous impulses. .

Every training session leaves me proud and humbled—of the goals I’ve met so far, and of the ones I have yet to accomplish. Though I was frustrated by the invasive stranger, it did show me that I need to brush up on Wally ignoring ALL strangers—even those who solicit his attention relentlessly. While he didn’t break his down, he DID break his eye contact and lean forward, which is unacceptable for my standards. .

We can’t train the public to behave themselves. But we can train our dogs.
