  • (Thanks to @inthemoviesky for requesting Aquaman). My thoughts on the film:
————————
🌗Don’t expect this to have an amazingly ingenious or original plot. The film is full of superhero film cliches such as “hero is defeated by the villain in Act 2 and must find strength to defeat them” and has borrowed plot points from other superhero film such as the villain being Aquaman’s brother and him being unworthy of the throne. But the world building was interesting and the lore was cool. As formulaic as a MCU origin film.
————————-
🌕🌗However, the visuals of the film mostly looked great. In all of the scenes I could actually tell what is going on, achieved by well done lighting and colours that pop behind the camera. This was especially true for the action scenes which were surprisingly entertaining and non-repetitive, partly due to the camerawork which did not fall fault to shaky cam but had lots of wide angles and tracking shots. Sometimes the CGI did look a bit dodgy though, on characters outfits or on massive sea monsters. ———————
🌗The acting was serviceable. There were no real standout performances that I noticed, except maybe Black Manta who seemed to produce the most emotional performance but then was sidelined for most of the film. Defoe’s character was kind of useless. Momoa was a bit rough around the edges and didn’t really seem to fit the character of Aquaman too well. ————————————————————————
🌗The dialogue was also very basic and average for a superhero film. It consisted of the usual attempts at wit (although majorly failed here to make me titter even once), mythological lore mumbo jumbo and “you can do it” speeches. It wasn’t awful and did help explain the interesting world but most of the time was cheesy and lacked dramatic depth. ——————-
⚡️The film also had a lot of stupid plot conveniences and lore inconsistencies but if you just go into the film with the knowledge that it’s a superhero film and wanting to be entertained, you will definitely have a good time. ————————————————————————
Final grade: 🌗+🌕+🌗+🌗+🌗 on the carp scale (a common carp award). (Thanks to @inthemoviesky for requesting Aquaman).
