H A P P Y ✨ A N N O U N C E M E N T ✨ As many of you know, in 2013 I set out to do a PhD. It's been an unexpectedly bumpy road, but I'm nearing the end of this journey.⠀
The reason for a PhD was rooted in a single dream - to one day become a Professor. Teaching is my ‘happy place’ and I knew that in order to do this full-time, I had to get a PhD. While I do enjoy conducting research, it wasn't my main driver - my motivation was to advance social work by working closely with its future practitioners. ⠀
Alas, this dream has come true! Last month, I was offered a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC. Not only is this a dream position, it's in a dream school and in a dream location. The university itself is student-centred, teaching-focused, globally-minded, innovative and has a mix of undergraduate and graduate programs. It's also very forward-thinking in terms of how it treats its tenure-track faculty.⠀
Furthermore, 3 years ago, my husband and I mapped out (on a napkin no less!) the characteristics of the ‘perfect place’ to live - this included being closer to nature, in a warmer climate and with access to a bigger city - and this move certainly checks these boxes. We will be nestled in the beautiful Fraser Valley near our favourite city - Vancouver. ⠀
There's a lot I could say about how this has come to fruition, however, right now it's a time for celebration and joy. All the hard work has paid off and I am so excited about this new adventure we are about to embark on. ⠀
While we will miss our family and friends in Calgary dearly, we are very excited about what's next for us in BC!! @kassim.dossa 😘

What's meant to be yours will always be yours. 💯 Let them speak, let them walk away, their opinions shouldn't affect us and neither should their choices. 💯 If they weren't there in our present, we should not expect them to be there in our future. 🙌 Let the past die where you left it. 😲💥 We do not possess the power to bring anything back to life, so why do we waste so much time trying to bring up the past which is dead? 💥 The future doesn't know you, and the past isn't looking for you. All that we know is happening right now, in this moment. 💯💥😲🙌❤❤❤
More often than not, people will break your heart. And in return, you’ll break hearts too. You’ll hold on to things that you shouldn’t, but will learn in time, it’s easier to let go of those things that only weigh you down. Inspiration will come in magic moments, and you’ll find breakthrough in the breakdown. In times of great sadness, you’ll discover who you are at the core. It’s what you find at the bottom that breaks you open. We are all dreamers, and sinners, refugees and light seekers. And while time and space will always collide, it’s hope perched on the clouds of change, where we find new meaning to this grand journey, called life.
Tomorrow is July 24. As far as I know, I don’t know if that’s a birthday for any of my friends or family, I’m sure Facebook will remind me. For me and my living bride, July 24 is the day we signed a franchise agreement that would change our life. Sadly, it was not a change for the better.
Three years ago we signed a contract then paid a large sum of money for a franchise that was never delivered. We trained in the industry, an industry targeted towards young children. It was an industry that I never thought I would enjoy working in. It filled the void that I had inside me after my discharge from the Australian Regular Army. Delay after delay dragged the process well beyond the 9 month timeframe to deliver the business we had purchased. The ordeal left both my bride and I emotionally, mentally and spiritually broken. Our trust in franchise corporations has been all but destroyed. Our mental health has suffered, mine to the point that I’m now on antidepressants. We are both broke, broken and our dream has been shattered. With the company that we bought the franchise off going into liquidation there is a tiny bit of hope that we may get some of our investment back and that there may be some justice served.
We have been knocked down. It’s the biggest hit that we have had to take. But what do you do when you get knocked down? You get up, dust yourself off and keep going. The path may be a different one than that of the one you started on. I mean, 19 years ago all that was in my head at the time was a lifetime career in the army. A back injury changed all that though.
The workbook in this photo represents the most recent I have had to get back up, dust myself off and keep going. This workbook represents a new future. It represents that I’m not letting one major setback stop me from being the best version of me I can be. My journey towards a fitter lifestyle also includes studying to be a personal trainer. The knowledge I am learning on course I will be applying to my own life as well as those who I will train as clients.
No more excuses.
Shoutout to my barber for giving me the coolest design yesterday 😎. Feeling more and more myself everyday! There’s so much power in living authentically YOU- outside the boundaries of what other people are willing to accept (because of their own fears!) I’ve had enough of living in the background to fear! Stepping out of the shadows! 💣👏🏻💥#fearlesslife#movingforward#hereiam#courageinvulnerability
