  • Today, I taught a bootcamp class at @athleta #legacyplace in honor or #nationalwomenandgirlsinsportsday.

That little peanut in the pink. She’s 8. She came to my class with her mom. And she absolutely kicked butt.

You see, this is why I do what I do. To work with young women and girls and help them discover their definition of wellness.
.
As the Fitness Manager and Strength Coach, my main goal for my students is to not only deepen their knowledge of what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, but also establish the confidence to take up space within the fitness room, and beyond.

I believe teaching the girls to explore different fitness classes, pieces of equipment and methods of exercise allows them to discover what routines motivate them. Unleashing this confidence in the gym quickly trickles into other areas of their lives; both social and academic.

The majority of these female students are growing up in a “social-media-centric” world where perceptions of “health” and “wellness” are skewed and typically, harmful to their developing perspective on body image. While it is nearly impossible to eliminate this component of their lives, my goal is to provide a knowledge-based ‘buffer’ where topics of safe and effective workout routines are discussed, programmed and implemented.

So, cheers to this national day (which was actually a few days ago, but who cares) and to the strong female athletes whom these young girls look up to ... thank you. • A little #tbt in honor of #nationalwomenandgirlsinsportsday. I’ve been an athlete my whole life. Whether it was part of a team or individual efforts like running and triathlon after college. Sport is a part of my core and has been the foundation for several life lessons, good and bad, over the years. -
It’s more than just winning or losing. It’s being a part of something bigger than yourself. It’s about finding your limits and then figuring out how to push past them. It’s about helping your teammates push past their boundaries. It’s about sacrifice. And celebration. And the friendship and camaraderie built in the suffering of exertion. -
You can always be better tomorrow than you are today. But all you can give today is your best. And if you gave your best, then hold your head high, win or lose. -
So cheers to all the athletes out there, whether you’re part of a team, hitting the gym, running in the park, or even working out to online videos at home. Being an athlete in any pursuit is one of the greatest experiences we can have. #ngwsd #playlikeagirl #liftlikeagirl #runlikeagirl #throwlikeagirl #womeninsports #strongwomen #rowirish A little #tbt in honor of #nationalwomenandgirlsinsportsday. • Jumping in the #waybackmachine here! This is my track photo from senior year of high school - spring 2005. #throwbackthursday .
I have played many sports in my life - but only two ever really felt like perfect fits: running 🏃🏼‍♀️and soccer ⚽️. I played soccer for 13 years and I ran track for 6. My dad used to time me running around the block as fast as I could!
.
My senior year of high school I joined the XC team for the hell of it. I was a sprinter on the track team and thought any distance over 400m was far too long to be running (this is why I say HS me would never believe I’ve run TWO marathons). But I joined XC and had SO MUCH FUN. I wasn’t even good and I didn’t care.
.
I ran on and off in college - only in the spring though because marching band was enough of a workout! #amiright
.
In the last 6 years I’ve rediscovered the love for running I had at 6 years old. And speedwork makes me feel like I’m on the track team again.
.
I missed #nationalwomenandgirlsinsportsday BUT I wanted to say what sports mean to me. In the 27 or so years I’ve been “playing” sports (does one “play” track? 🤣) I have learned how to challenge myself physically and mentally. I have done things I never thought I would do. I have made long term friends. I am a better person because of sports (and music, but that’s a story for a different day).
.

  • A little #throwback to one of my very first dressage competitions to celebrate #NationalWomenandGirlsinSportsDay 🎉 I can’t believe I’ve been in this sport for 15 years now! 😱 Through both success and failure, triumph and heartache, this sport has helped shape me into the person I am today. I’m so thankful for all of the life lessons and relationships I have gained over the past fifteen years. From starting out as a shy, timid, and insecure kid, through various experiences I am learning to use my voice, value myself, and be confident in my abilities. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m grateful for my path and can’t wait to see what the future holds. 💪🏼

  • Happy belated #nationalwomenandgirlsinsportsday ! Here’s a fun little comparison of what sports looked like for me at the age of 18 versus what they look like now 😀 Participating in sports shaped who I am today and it is much of my chosen identity. I think many of us forget (esp the dudes) that it wasn’t too long ago that girls didn’t have the chance to participate. Even my specialty event of polevaulting wasn’t an Olympic sport until 20 years ago... and here I am 16 years ago flying high, setting national records like it was past time. I now hold the perspective of how progressive we were, and how blessed we were to get to fly like this during the first decade of this new women’s sport. In the 70s, My own mom excelled at running and jumping and gymnastics in her youth, but had no opportunity to compete in track in high school. There simply wasn’t a choice. We are still not at equality in sports. I won’t go into great detail here, but let’s just say at one point I thought about being an NCAA lawyer representing collegiate female athletes 🤔My new sport, the women’s decathlon (my fellow competitors I mean cheer leaders pictured), is the only remaining event in track and field that doesn’t have gender equality. First it was pole vault to earn the right, then the steeplechase, and now it’s just the decathlon. Coaches around the world debate over if women can handle it. Seriously? You should see what some of thee chauvinists say. Can we handle it? We are already doing it. So here’s to 20 years from now and the opportunity get rise up and be apart of this movement. For me, for my mother who didn’t get the chance to compete, and for my girls, who have the entire world at the ready and the guts to take it on.

Although I never thought I would step away from running, taking a break was exactly what I needed and I have found my passion again 🏃🏼‍♀️I have slowly been running again and am excited about the half marathon that I am training for ☺️ Today is #nationalwomenandgirlsinsportsday Running has been a very large part of my life, and I have been blessed to be surrounded strong supportive women through high school, college and now onto coaching.
