💊 The contraceptive pill: The best thing since sliced bread or the biggest medical scandal around? •

💊 There are two times in your life as a female when, hormonally, massive changes are happening in your body: puberty & menopause - the beginning and end (at least biologically) of your reproductive years. •

💊 At the menopause, women are, understandably, cautious with their choices around which, if any, artificial hormones (aka HRT) to take. It’s shocking to me that seemingly, the same regard is not given to pumping artificial hormones into teenagers and younger women.

💊 Of course the pill was a medical breakthrough of its time and hormonal contraception now comes in many different forms eg pill, implant, patch, IUD, injection, but why have we not been encouraged to stop & think what effect taking artificial hormones has on our body and health first? Especially in our teenage years. •

💊 The last decade has seen a 50% increase in 12-15yr olds taking the pill. Because of these artificial hormones, these teenagers are at increased risk of impaired bone density, altered brain structure & increase risk of depression. And at what cost? For preventing conception which is only biologically possible a few days of your cycle anyway. •
•
💊 I would love to see a world where girls are taught properly about the menstrual cycle & the importance of what that means for our health. Also a world where ALL non-hormonal contraceptives are given as much screen time as the hormonal ones. It’s time for a change........
