  • Sensitivity isn’t #weakness. It just means you pay attention.

When someone shares something #painful, it’s best to say, “I’m sorry that’s happening. Do you want to tell me more about it?” Acknowledgement is an amazing multi-tool that makes things better even if they can’t be made right. To be able to say ‘this happened and it hurts’ without being ‘talked out of it’ is what helps.

The human soul doesn’t want to be #saved, #fixed, or #advised. It wants to be witnessed, exactly as it is. Trying to cheer someone up by saying, “hey, look on the bright side!” makes them #defensive of their #feelings. Giving advice makes someone feel #misunderstood rather than #supported and causes them to stop telling you about their pain. Those ‘best efforts’ backfire and nobody wins.
.
When someone’s life goes up in flames, it’s better to #acknowledge the flames and believe their pain exists. Letting someone hurt helps people #grieve more productively in profound ways, rather than trying to give them #advice or trying to take their #pain away. They may not remember what you said or did, but trust me, they will remember how you made them #feel.
.
In order to really #support someone, you have to acknowledge that things really are as bad as they feel to them. Always take their word, like a good friend should.
