₪ Faces of Oceania Part 1 🌏. Focus on this Ancestor Figure, East Sepik Province, North Coast, Aitape region, Papua New Guinea 🔎 These anthropomorphic figures go by the name of kandimboa(n)g among the peoples living in the region of the mouths of the Sepik and Ramu rivers. According to Joseph Schmidt (“Die Ethnographie der Nor-Papua“, 1933), they incarnate the mythical founding heroes of the clan. Otto Reche states that they also served as memorial figures for ancestors who had marked the history of the clan (“Der Kaiserin-Augusta-Fluss/ Sepik River“, 1913). They were solicited during initiation rituals, and finally served as protective figures for the community. Each statue bore the name of an ancestor, the name itself attached to a specific myth and song. When not being used in ceremonies, the statues were kept in the Men’s House where they received offerings of food. This male sculpture is remarkable for its intensity, radiating all the strength of the warrior. The delicacy and slenderness of the legs contrasts with the volumes of the upper body, exalting the power of the ancestor. ⊙

Was blessed enough to be the First female to access this newly built Koiari Tree house up in Sogeri. The height of the tree is approximately 15m. My great grandfather is originally from Koiari which made it extra special ❤️🇵🇬 •
Even today the Koiari people are feared and tourists are warned to enter their lands with caution. The Koiari lived in tree houses. There is now some dispute about whether this was so that they could look out for enemies or whether the houses were used as a retreat in times of clan dispute. They hunted wallabies, cuscus, and other forest animals They also grew crops around the village using slash and burn agriculture, so most of the forest would have been cleared some time in the past and has regenerated.
Location soon to be revealed when accessible to the public.

This place would not be the same without Joe - his wit, smile and endless stories enough to brighten anyone's day 😁☀️ His knowledge of the area is also amazing, when we go out for the day were not only going for an adventure but an awesome history trip too!
People are so friendly, culture is alive and well, and the scenery is like all your Jurassic park / tropical island dreams come true. Not to mention easy flights from Australia and the same time zone. What’s not to love? #visitpng#plentygoodinpng
Some characters stand out and this fellow was one that did just that. Clinically mute and only able to communicate with hand gestures and muffled grunts, but a truly valuable member of the village. Highly involved in demonstrating traditional culture, including fire starting, I was particularly happy to find out that the war club I purchased had been carved by him. Nice to know that the Kina I parted with was going to such a fantastic fellow.
"Why only me"(日本語下にあります)
My name is Nagamine Hayata. I'm a JICA's volunteer,
helping Milne bay Provincial Hospital(MBPHA) in PNG and treating patients. There are plenty of patients we treat each day. I treated one patient, and I thought that I want to give some power to the disable people. After that, I made lyrics of this song and offered to my senior for making music of this song.
So, I want to spread this song for all of the disable people. If you see this page, please share and spread using your page. I hope it will reach as many people as possible.
This is YouTube page of this song.
Please listen. Thank you.
From Toshikazu Maruno and Hayata Nagamine
