Which countries produce a greater proportion of global CO2 emissions than their proportion of the global population?
ā€¢
"What is this?
A map showing which countries contribute more to global emissions than they contribute to the global population, i.e. which countries pollute the most disproportionately for their population."
ā€¢
"Why is this important?
Colloquial discussions of emissions reductions in countries with smaller populations (e.g. Canada) sometimes bring up the fact that smaller countries contribute very little to global emissions compared to giants like India and China. While this is technically true, it is important to recognize that some of these small countries pollute much more disproportionately than the big polluters. For example, Canada pollutes more than three times what would be expected given its population size."
ā€¢
"Why not just show emissions per capita?
Emissions per capita shows emissions in more of an absolute sense while this map shows emissions in more of a relative sense. Looking at a map that illustrates emissions per capita doesn't give a sense of what the 'right' per capita emissions are. The map used, on the other hand, makes it easy to understand the 'unfairness' of emissions contributions. It can easily be seen that some countries are taking more than their fair share from the planet."
