Self Titled - The Story So Far
Before almost completlety re inventing themselves on 2018's "Proper Dose". Walnut creek pop punks The Story So Far released this self titled record. The final album for 3 years due to the band taking a lengthy and much needed break.
A lot of people tend to write this album off for not having the same sort of bounce and "Typical" pop punk stylings the band had become known for, which I can understand. But it is, for the most part, exactly what you could ask for in a TSSF album. Angsty lyrics, with chugging guitars and catchy "spit in your face" lyrics. There is a certain level of maturity however in these songs. Yes, there is still a huge amount of bitter songs clearly aimed at ex girlfriends and people that have wronged Parker Cannon over the years. But there is definitely some growth in the sound and style of the band. ' 'Phantom' is a perfect example of this, easy to write off as just another pop punk slow ballad, but it does incorporate some massive shoegaze elements that the band would later build on with "Proper Dose" and its definitely a refreshing break from all the pent up rage of the rest of the album.
It does however, have to be said that the angry, finger pointing majority of the rest of the album can become a bit monotamous at times. Despite some truly fantastic musicianship and flow at times on songs like 'Heavy Gloom' and 'Solo'. The lyrics do all start to sound the same as a lot of the bands back catalogue. It truly does leave you wondering just how many people can have pissed off Parker by this point?
All in all, The Story So Far are for the most part a very consistent band, am I glad they took the direction they did on "Proper Dose" ? Absolutely, but its albums like this that have built them their reputation and fan base. Even if all their previous albums do tend to blend into one. - Sam
