  • Update on the #portlandprotest:

DONT LISTEN TO THE NATIONAL NEWS!! 13 have been arrested and for the most part the protest was peaceful. At one point one of the groups asked to move to the other side of the river to keep the peace. The cops ceases multiple items that could be used to hurt others before anyone got seriously hurt. There were just a few incidents where the cops got involved immediately to break up the fights & only one person got taken to the hospital.
I think @katutv showed the best news coverage of this event and I believe the #portlandpolice did a phenomenal job keeping everyone safe.

It’s always a challenge for a city when large groups of people gather to exercise their rights. It can be extremely dangerous and chaotic. 48 hours later I still feel safe in this city! I would still walk downtown in the middle of the protest with a kid to go sight seeing. Why? Because we #keepportlandweird and know our police department has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to violence.

  • Today the #NYPD officer that murdered #EricGarner was fired. It took five years. No word on what department will hire him after this - as that is something that regularly happens after officers are let go for beating or killing a person. Bill de Blasio and much of NYC's political machine stayed mostly silent on the fact that the officer who murdered Eric Garner will never be prosecuted and have made no moves to change the way that the NYPD operates in the city.
Activists did though - they're still working day in and day out to change the way that the nations largest armed force, outside of the military, does their work. Here's several photos from back in 2014 in the early days of the Eric Garner inspired protests in NYC.

  • Better late than never 🤷🏾‍♀️ Here is your daily rundown:
1. It's been so hot in #Alaska that there are large numbers of #salmon dying. One scientist told CNN that she and a group of colleagues on an expedition along the #KoyukukRiver counted 850 dead salmon, although they estimated the total was likely four to 10 times larger. None of the fish showed signs of lesions, parasites and infections, so the scientists concluded the die-off is connected with the heat wave.
2. The dreaded no-deal #Brexit is staring the tUK right in the face and a government report leaked to a newspaper predicts it will be as disastrous as everyone fears. The report, printed in The Sunday Times, says the UK will face food, fuel and medicine shortages if it leaves the #EuropeanUnion without a trade deal. It added that the public and businesses were unprepared for a no-deal Brexit.
3. Hundreds of thousands of people marched through Hong Kong's streets yesterday in the 11th straight weekend of mass anti-government demonstrations. The #protest movement has been tested as of late by police bans and threats from the #Chinese government. It rained during the marches, so much of the city center turned into a sea of slow moving umbrellas.
4. At least 63 people were killed (and almost 200 injured) in #Kabul after someone detonated an explosive vest at a wedding hall. #ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. All this happens as the #US tries to finalize a #peace plan with the #Taliban that could end America's 18-year-war there.
5. Authorities in three states say they stopped three potential mass shootings over the past few days. All three cases were brought to their attention thanks to tips from the public. In #Connecticut, 22-year-old Brandon Wagshol was arrested after he allegedly expressed interest on Facebook of committing a mass shooting. In #Florida, 25-year-old Tristan Scott Wix was arrested after he sent his ex-girlfriend disturbing text messages in which he allegedly threatened to commit a mass shooting. In #Ohio, 20-year-old James Patrick Reardon was arrested after he allegedly threatened to shoot up a #Jewish community center in #Youngstown.

  • Reposted from @theeconomist (@get_regrann) - It could be confetti scattered across a pavement.

In fact these are umbrellas—long a symbol of passive resistance in Hong Kong—held aloft by pro-democracy activists at the huge rally on the island on Sunday.

Undeterred by heavy rain and police restrictions, protesters sent the world two messages.

First, that even after 11 weeks of protests, their anti-government campaign is still in fine fettle.

Second, that those responsible for the havoc and violence at the city's airport are not representative of the largely peaceful and broad-based pro-democracy movement.

Click the link in our bio to learn why these orderly marchers are increasing the pressure on Hong Kong's government.

  • Today, Javier Bardem (@bardemantarctic) is addressing the United Nations at the Global Oceans Treaty negotiations.

Our oceans are under more pressure now than in any other time in history. But we are at a crossroads. If they get it right, it'll open the door to a vast network of ocean sanctuaries, which could protect over a third of the world's seas.

  • Absolutely loving my @7seasrope hoodie and bracelet ❤ Have had so many complements, loving the fact that every bracelet is made from materials that have been found dumped in the ocean! All this material could be a potential risk to wildlife 🐳
On another note, I completed my SSI open water diver training today! Not long till I'll be cleaning up the oceans while underwater, not just on the beaches! 😊❤ Absolutely loving my @7seasrope hoodie and bracelet ❤ Have had so many complements, loving the fact that every bracelet is made from materials that have been found dumped in the ocean!
