  • Day 2 of the #aestheticwipup challenge! And the prompt was Your World.
As I'm not a fantasy writer and my book is set technically set in this universe, or rather, my own canon of it - I decided my board today would represent Hillside Academy, the school, and what it means to be a HSA student.

I'm also going to take this opportunity to reach out to Beta Readers. I'm searching for a handful of people to be in the first round of Beta Reading for Book 1 of Hillside Academy. Below I've put a quick pitch which sums up my New Adult Fiction book series better than me... Hillside Academy is a new adult fiction series set at a mixed school in England. Centred around eight MCs during their two years of Sixth Form, HSA highlights and celebrates the absurd antics of youth. This dark, passionate sometimes loving and funny first book in the series opens up uncomfortable conversations that need to be discussed. Delving into the subject of sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, mental health and childhood trauma. This story is real life: raw and unforgiving. These troubled, naughty, affluent misfits each have a secret... Which one will be revealed first and exactly who will be destroyed in the process?

If you're enticed and interested to read more, drop me a DM and become a Beta Reader. Doesn't matter if you've never done it before. All I ask is that you like to read, can do it within a time frame and are enthusiastic about the story itself. Thank you! ❤️❤️ #aestheticboard #bookaesethic #betareaders #amwriting #amediting #amreading #bookstagram #readers #readersofinstagram #writers #authorchallenge #authorchallenge2019 #reading #afternoonreads #elevatorpitch #queryletter #publishing #literaryagents Day 2 of the #aestheticwipup challenge! • Feral Girl* Books is proud to announce the cover reveal of our own @nikkizrichard’s DEMON IN THE WHITELANDS, the first in a trilogy from @month9books, on sale September 24th!

Sometimes no matter how hard you try, some things cannot be explained.

Sixteen-year-old Samuel, son of devout cleric, has endured shame and prejudice his entire life. Although he is destined to become clergy too, he longs for an ordinary life in the whitelands away from demons and holy roots.
When the mayor claims to have captured a mute demon girl, Samuel is forced to become her caretaker. But as Samuel gets to know the prisoner, he finds her not to be very demonlike. Instead, she is intelligent, meek, and an exceptional artist. Despite her seeming goodness, some more concerning things cannot be explained. Samuel is hard-pressed to reconcile her uncanny strength and speed, missing arm, ambiguous gender, and the mysterious scars covering most of her body.

Samuel forms a deep attachment to the girl with predator eyes and violent outbursts, against his father’s advice. Their friendship could turn into something more. But when Samuel discovers the mayor’s dark intentions, he must decide whether to risk his own execution by setting her free or watch as the girl is used as a pawn in a dangerous game of oppression, fear, and murder.

Nikki and Amy first connected during idea week, during which Amy pitched several concepts she wanted to work with, and offered a discount for any author who fit the bill! We think the publication of DEMON IN THE WHITELANDS is a good reason to bring back idea week, so keep an 👁 out!

Nikki Z. Richard identifies as trans/queer/lesbian with pronouns “she/her.” Here’s her spill on the main characters of DEMONS IN THE WHITELANDS and their identities:

Beginning in DitW, Samuel is exploring his sexual and gender identity; from his attractions to Claudette, Zei, and Charles, to his own understandings of gender roles and his gender identity. His queerness, and the queer identities of other characters, will be further developed in the following books. Pre-order in the bio link! • it's almost the 4th of july. 6/7 of my dads siblings are coming into town. i'm desperately trying to finish my outline so when my little cousins find it, as they surely will, it'll be just fine if notecards get lost or misplaced. {note the sarcasm please.} 😬
•
don't get me wrong, i love kids. kids that are infants. kids that can't really get around on their own. there are some good kids who play nicely & then there are the ones who don't listen when you ask nicely one million times to not put those nice pens in their mouth. 🤢
•
it should be fun, though. the vrska family is notorious for getting wild. july 4th is a time to celebrate in my family & trust me, the vrska's know how to celebrate. 🎉
•
#writeupjuly day 2: what does writing mean to you? ☀️
•
let's get real for a second here. writing is not easy. it kind of really sucks sometimes. you run out of ideas. your debut novel you were so proud of gets rejected by all the publishers. your query letter just doesn't sound right. you can't find an agent & it's taking its toll on your confidence. all of these things may have happened to you. some of them happened to me. that's why i write. i write because these experiences give me strength to overcome the next set of trials thrown my way. writing is my way of saying to the world, "i'm here, i'm ready, & i want you to bash my writing." in the end, it just makes us stronger. 🙌🏻
•
i love to play the piano. i took lessons for a year & a half when i was 7. i hated them. i hid under my bed with a s'mores poptart so i wouldn't starve to death for that dreaded hour. it never worked. my piano teacher lived next door & she was homeschooled. i always ended up having to go to lessons. they ended after i moved away & i rejoiced. the wretched days of piano lessons were over! little did i know that only a few years later, i would be wishing i had taken that opportunity seriously. i began to self-teach past just the basics & now i can plunk out almost anything you put in front of me, no thanks to 7-year-old me. 🎹
