The Blueberry write up based on observations on catalogs and Blueberries sold online - Part 1.
Anodizing defects of gmt inserts in the 1960s and 1970s how to difer authentic inserts from aftermarket inserts.
GMT inserts are etched , Masked , anodized dyed and sealed. Same idea as your coloured IPhone .
Anodize : " coat (a metal, especially aluminium) with a protective oxide layer by an electrolytic process in which the metal forms the anode." .
Layman terms the surface of the Almunium get enforced against oxidation, degreased , masked , dyed with color . Above that comes a Nickel accete sealing for more protection .
Coincidently the easiest and cheapest colours to make are Red ,blue , Orange , violet and purple. .
Observing many inserts in catalogs i noticed recurring defects in the same paterns .
The most common defects are pitting, comet trails , airspots and spalling . As those defect manifest the coating tends to break up. .
1960 era inserts after the coating breaks up tend to suffer lots of corrosion.
In the 1980s and onward Rolex seemed to have improved their tecnology .
Other Interesting thing is you see some of the same defects in 1960/1970s dials . .
I have a added some pictures to ilustrate those defects on inserts from the 1960s 1970s.
Also Note that the mayority of the Blueberry Inserts from the 1970 s dont show those defects .It looks like they are made with modern technologie, Google and see it .
Part two how do GMT inserts fade ? .
