All smiles in Ukraine! Matchday tomorrow, now we're down to only one actual centre back. We could be in a bit of trouble, but @fernandinho can also play at the back which I think is what will happen. Hopefully Ederson keeps a clean sheet! 🇺🇦💙
Here’s my predicted team to face Shakhtar Donetsk in Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League group stage, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, tomorrow night:
🇦🇷30. Nicolas Otamendi ~ Despite an awful performance at Norwich, he’s our only fit senior centre-back.
🇧🇷25. Fernandinho ~ With both Laporte and now Stones our injured, he’ll surely have to come in at defence like he did off the bench against Brighton.
🇵🇹27. João Cancelo ~ After Walker’s 1st poor performance at the weekend, I can’t see a better opportunity for our new right-back to make his full debut.
🇫🇷22. Benjamin Mendy ~ He’s now fully fit and ready for action and after Zinchenko’s poor display at Norwich, I can also see a change in personnel at left-back.
🇧🇪17. Kevin de Bruyne
🇵🇹20. Bernardo Silva ~ I don’t know why but I can just see him dropping into midfield and Mahrez going out wide for David Silva.
🇩🇿26. Riyad Mahrez 🏴7. Raheem Sterling 🇦🇷10. Sergio Aguero
🇨🇱1. Claudio Bravo 🇪🇸50. Eric Garcia ~ Guardiola announced earlier that Stones picked up an injury so he will surely be our substitute centre-back.
🏴2. Kyle Walker
🇺🇦11. Oleksandr Zinchenko
🇩🇪8. Ilkay Gundogan 🇪🇸21. David Silva 🇧🇷9. Gabriel Jesus
To be honest, after that dreadful eyesore on Saturday, I think we need a big reshuffle and I think this is the time to do it. Obviously, we knew that Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sanè are still out and will be for a few months but like I said, now John Stones has been ruled out for 4-5 weeks with a muscular injury, which he seems to have had trouble with for ages now, so we’re now down to just 1 fit senior centre-back, we really are not in luck at the moment! We may be overwhelming favourites but it’s going to be a very tough game so we must not underestimate them. However, with the talent we have in our squad, we should be winning tomorrow and the lads should be hungry, rather than demoralised, after Saturday so I think we’ll play well and hopefully, we can return to winning ways and start our 2019/20 Champions League campaign in the best way possible. Come on City!💙🦈
This morning John Stones picked up muscular injury and will be out for 5-6 weeks. This means that Garcia will most likely get a chance in the first team.
Phil Foden is out for a game against Shakhtar Donetsk because of a stomach virus.
Horrible news for us 🤐
All ready for the UCL night on Wednesday! Can't wait for this to get under way again. Hopefully more saves from Ederson like the ones against Hoffenheim last year. Let's get through this group stage 💪🏼💙 Tudo pronto para a noite da UCL na quarta-feira! Mal posso esperar para que isso comece novamente. Esperançosamente, mais Ederson salva como o Hoffenheim no ano passado. Vamos passar por esta fase de grupos 💪🏼💙
Here’s my preview for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, away in Ukraine at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv. The game will be shown live on BT Sport in the UK, but I’m not sure about other countries. Due to the civil wars in Ukraine, Shakhtar have been playing in Kharkiv, instead of the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, since 2017, and this season is no different.
🔶 Shakhtar Donetsk:
Dynamo Kyiv (A): 1-2 ✅
Lviv (A): 0-2 ✅
Mariupol (H): 5-0 ✅
Olimpik Donetsk (A): 0-4 ✅
Zorya (H): 4-3 ✅
Unsurprisingly really, Shakhtar are top of the Ukrainian top flight, and have a 100% record from 7 games to start the season. As you probably know already, they’re a dominant force in Eastern Europe so they’re expected to win the league again this season, and they’re showing no signs of failing to do so. I think out of them and the other 2 teams in our group, any could go through, hopefully behind us as you’d expect, so I’m not sure if they will go through but I’d say they’re stronger than Dinamo Zagreb. To my knowledge, Taison, who I’d say is their best player, is out for the game but they still have a number of players who could cause a few problems and who we’re familiar with after facing them for the past 2 seasons. Experienced keeper, Andriy Pyatov, Ismaily in defence, Taras Stepanenko and Viktor Kovalenko In midfield with Marlos and Yevhen Konoplyanka on the wings. That’s quite a few dangerous players but for their key player, I’ve gone with Junior Moraes, who has recently switched allegiances to Ukraine, and has 7 goals and 3 assists so far this season.
Despite our shock loss at Norwich last weekend, we’re still having a great season and are still in with a good chance at retaining a 3rd Premier League title. 10 points from a possible 15 is pretty good in the Premier League and we’ll be looking to get back to winning ways in Ukraine on Wednesday. Obviously, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sanè are still out injured, but to my knowledge, everyone else is fit, but I’m not too sure about Benjamin Mendy, as he’s recently returned from injury and I don’t know if he’s fully match fit yet.
