Shillong is a stunningly picturesque hill town in north eastern India. Its climate is cool and bracing and its culture unique- a blend of local Khasi tribal, western (due largely to the influence of western missionaries in the 18th and 19th centuries who also made this, along with two other north eastern states,a Christian majority state- the only three in India) and Assamese, Bengali and Nepalese cultures. You also find more people from other Indian states here than in other parts of the region. The city is huge on music , especially rock and more recently hip hop, and football and is home to some of the best musicians (Shillong Chamber Choir, Lou ‘Mr. Dylan’ Majaw, blues band Soulmate) and football clubs (Shillong Lajong FC) in India. And of late, a clutch of English-language writers too (Janice Pariat being one). It also houses the best schools in the region. All in all, quite a package! Shillong also happens to be my birthplace. I lived nine of my first 15 years here.
A recent three day visit not only brought back the magic some 30+ years later but also endowed value to stuff I must have taken for granted growing up back then !
This first post in a series of pics from my trip is on the wonderful Lachaumiere House guest house we stayed in. Well recommended!
