S P E C I E S: Tarbagan marmot (Marmota sibirica), Russia
.
I N F O: The Tarbagan marmot is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae. It is found in China (Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang), northern and western Mongolia, and Russia (southwest Siberia, Tuva, Transbaikalia). They weigh between 6 and 8 kg and measure 50 to 60 cm in length. Their tails are bushy and approximately one half of their body length. Their fur is primarily brown in color, medium length, and fine in texture
.
Tarbagan marmots are considered endangered by the IUCN. The population has been experiencing a long term decline, and 70% of the population was lost in the 1990s. This decline is primarily attributed to exploitation by human enterprise (Hunting because of food and fur; traded illegally). Between 1906 and 1994, 104.2 million skins were prepared in Mongolia alone. Another reason for the decline is a disease, the plague. The plague in marmots is a form of the pneumonic, called "marmot plague". The Tarbagan Marmot may transmit the plague, and is therefore subject to stringent control measures in many parts of its range. The fear of the plague has led to massive extermination campaigns, removing both infected and healthy marmots.

Tarbagan marmots in Russia are particularly threatened, as they rarely occur in the wild. This species is protected under the Mongolian Protected Area Laws and Hunting Laws, though these laws do not specifically focus on Marmota sibirica.
