  • "At one time over 150 people were swimming in the...lake. Picnickers swarmed over the preserves, boats of all types were in the water."- H.I. Gelvin, at the opening of the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, 1948.

In this edition of #CollectionsCorner, we are exploring the role that Lake of the Woods has played in celebrating summer for the people of Champaign County.
Back in the day, you might have ridden on the Sea Slide, as seen in this vintage postcard, or swum at Lake of the Woods. The toboggan type seat for the Sea Slide can still be viewed at Museum of the Grand Prairie.

And don't forget to stop by the museum to look for the Sea Slide Sled! As always, admission is free. "At one time over 150 people were swimming in the...lake.
