  • In the early days of #louisisana, #masonry, lodges were primarily non-English speaking. German, Spanish, French, Italian, and other languages were established prior to English speaking lodges. It was tradition that each of these lodges be named after a great writer who wrote in the mother tongue of these Masons. Cervantes Lodge No. 5 served Spanish speaking brothers. As English became the predominant tongue of Louisiana, eventually many of these early lodges adopted English, but have tried to maintain the memory of their origins. Further, as many of these lodges predated the establishment of Louisiana statehood, and came from lands that did not practice York Masonry, many practiced (and are still permitted to practice) Scottish Craft Masonry. Currently, Cervantes Lodge No. 5 can work in both Spanish and English and practices Scottish Craft Masonry.
