The NBA’s Stats API provides data for every single shot attempted during an NBA game since 1996, including location coordinates on the court.
BallR lets you select a player and season, then creates a customizable chart that shows shot patterns across the court. Additionally, it calculates aggregate statistics like field goal percentage and points per shot attempt, and compares the selected player to league averages at different areas of the court.
Hexagonal charts, popularized by Kirk Goldsberry at Grantland, group shots into hexagonal regions, then calculate aggregate statistics within each hexagon. Hexagon sizes and opacities are proportional to the number of shots taken within each hexagon, while the color scale represents a metric of your choice.

We had the opportunity to speak at the O’Reilly AI conference last year 🎤 Our talk was on - Why designing for trust matters 🤝. Unless you’re Google, or one of the other FAANGs the question that always comes up is, how do I compete? 🤔 [Corporation X] has it all sewn up! One of the most fruitful answers that we want to talk about is: trust. And specifically, designing for trust – the trust of your business, and the trust of your future users 👥. After the flood’s story as a company is one of learning how to do this. We went from making products, to making businesses, and along the way learned how to make something from nothing. Whether it’s a business literally from nothing – where you have to find the sticks to make the fire – or making a new business from within a business – which follows more or less the same principles in a different context. Our approach is to create new business and revenue, through design and consulting: or in other words answering the question: What are the new ways, with new revenues, that a business could operate? 👊⠀

There has been much excitement online about ggjoy which is an R package making vertically stacked area charts with a common x-axis. It is reminiscent of the Joy Division album cover, so I guess that ticks some cultural boxes in the dataviz community.
You might use this look if you’re visualising continuous x, continuous y and categorical z. z is the stacking variable. Now, z could be ordinal or you might want to order it in some sensible way. What way? Like in the example above, it works best when there is an approximately smooth curve through the chart from top to bottom. Lindberg and Gregg have used different orders. There isn’t a right or wrong, because you emphasise different messages either way. We agree! 👊💥— The value from data is paramount. Value might be fiscal, operational (utility,efficiency), strategic or reputational. Standard estimations of data and value while massive in economic terms (£54 billion per year for the UK alone according to CEBR,2016) - neglects data’s potential as a creative material. But across sectors, business and organisations either ignores data, or approaches data in ways that can be improved - especially in creating new intellectual, products, data and services. We believe understanding users, interpreting data in a way that creates opportunity in uncertainty, prototyping products and services that validate commercial viability and building ownership capacity once projects is a vital stepping stone in unlocking the transformative value of data. —

Databases with the tools for capture, storage, management, retrieval, integration, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and dissemination have the potential to be the single most powerful tools in sport science. And with the amount of data available in todays sporting world because of technology advancements is seeming unimaginable. However, it serves no use without people to interpret and analyse how it may be useful!!!
