  • New flower I grew in 2019 - sunflower!
This is day 24 of #whatgardeningtaughtme2019 !
Do you grow any flowers in your garden? Maybe a perfect "beginners flower" like the sunflower? Believe it or not: I never ever grew sunflowers before 2019. In fact I never grew any flower intentionally apart from the fact that I tried not to kill the flowers that already had been growing in the garden, like roses and wild sweet peas.
2019 I started to give more thought to #interplanting and therefor I considered flowers and herbs to plant in between veggies, instead of only mixing my veggies like befor. And that's the reason why I grew my very first sunflowers. And cosmos. And zinnias. And calendula. And so on.
For this topic I picked the sunflowers because although I chose a seedmix of "sunflowers of different colors, medium height and with several branches of flowers" I ended up with several tree-like plants, they indeed had different colors, yellow, deep red and everything in between. And they all set more then one flower. But I was ist surprised when they kept growing and growing, far beond my own height. 😁 They where impressively and unexpectedly tall and beautiful.
In the picture you can see some of the sunflower trees, reaching for the 3+ m in height, that they grew by the end of the summer.
Not only did I cut countless flowers for the vase, they also provided an abundance of food, first for pollinators and then for the birds that ate their seeds. I also cut a lot of heads for the seeds but to my shame I stored them wrong. Half of them got moldy and the other half got eaten by mice 😭. Oh well... Still got a lot to learn.
I now am left with seeds for the next year and a couple of heads to still give to birds during winter. I also am madly in love with the beauty and magnificence of sunflowers and I'm surely gonna try for those flower-trees again this year.
