Asters are autumn daisies in a wide range of colours from white, through all shades of pink and purple. They flower really late and give a strong splash of colour in September when most other flowers are beginning fade. To the bees, this means having a source for food in late season. Num-num!
Aster was used in ancient times to ward off serpents. The Iroquois used the flower of the New England Aster in love medicine. New York Aster and A. Cordifolius are excellent aromatic nervine in many cases preferable to Valerian. Aster puniceus is stimulant and diaphoretic: the warm infusion may be used freely in colds, rheumatism, nervous debility, headache, pains in the stomach, dizziness, and menstrual irregularities. This, together with A. cordifolius, has been compared in value with valerian.

  • Time for an alley flower appreciation post since it’s #wildflowerwednesday Also worth noting that all of these are widely considered “weeds” but are In fact native and providing late summer nectar for our pollinators. 1-2) Common Boneset (in the aster family) 3) Common Aster- I didn’t realize we had so many different flowers in this family here until JUST NOW 🤯 So I’ll have to go back to identify better. 4) The sign that summer is coming to an end-Goldenrods and 5)Common Beggarticks, which seems to grow ANYWHERE- I also didn’t know was native until this post. Please feel free to either correct me or add more detail about any of these flowers 🙏 Time for an alley flower appreciation post since it’s #wildflowerwednesday Also worth noting that all of these are widely considered “weeds” but are In fact native and providing late summer nectar for our pollinators. • #wildflowerwednesday Columbian Monkshood On the bus ride down I thought I'd seen a field of super tall larkspur but later on the trail I quickly passed what I assumed was the same flower but without stopping I could only say it looked like some sort of unfamiliar fancy larkspur. Later I remembered a flower I'd seen in Waterton Lakes, Canada that I didn't know. That's how not stopping for flowers can drive you mad. When I finally went back to see what they were it turns out there was a field of super tall larkspur AND monkshood. #wildflowerwednesday Columbian Monkshood On the bus ride down I thought I'd seen a field of super tall larkspur but later on the trail I quickly passed what I assumed was the same flower but without stopping I could only say it looked like some sort of unfamiliar fancy larkspur. Eucephalus ledophyllus
Mama Hood| Wy'east
Purple asters in the subalpine give me all the autumnal mountain feels. Winter is coming. #wildflowerwednesday Eucephalus ledophyllus Mama Hood| Wy'east Purple asters in the subalpine give me all the autumnal mountain feels. Winter is coming.
