⚡️Stop Wasting Energy if You Want to PR!! ⚡️
💡 We buy cars and appliances that have higher energy efficiency ratings to save costs in gas and electricity. So why do we continue to waste energy when we can make our engines (bodies) more efficient?
🏃🏽♀️ What is running economy? In basic terms it’s the amount of oxygen consumed in a certain time or distance relative to your weight. Having a lower running economy means you use less oxygen at a given effort (you’re more efficient) and this is a good predictor of race performance. Better running economy = faster race times!
💢 Several factors that affect running economy can’t be changed: age, gender, and race. Other factors that impact running economy that can be changed, though, include: vertical motion when running, the ability of your muscles to push off and absorb energy, technique, fitness, training, weight of clothing and the environment.
🏋🏼♀️ Out of the variable factors that can change running economy, strength training can influence everything but the weight of your clothes and the environment!
✨ Strength training results in more neurons firing when a muscle contracts which produces greater force. It also results in changing muscle fibers from more fast twitch to slow twitch type fibers. Slow twitch fibers are more resistant to fatigue, which is great for endurance athletes! It also results in muscles having more “springiness,” allowing them to store and release more energy on push-off.
💤 If your muscles don’t fatigue as quickly, you can maintain your speed for longer! Don’t fall off your pace at the end of your race due to fatigue breaking down your running form!
🗝 Strength training is the key to help waste less energy so you can achieve that new PR without logging more miles!
