  • MIRROR FACE. "We're ashamed because we've been caught performing being beautiful, when the world just expects us to be beautiful."

#maraaltman's relationship with her body is much like that of all women - obsessive, insecure at some times, proud. As I near the end of my 20s, I laugh and appreciate my pubescence, covering myself neck down in shaving cream and taking my BIC razor for a ride, truly believing no hair was the way to go. I remember not knowing how to tweeze my eyebrows, thus tweezing off the top portion till my brows resembled straight lines above my eyes. I remember OBSESSING over belly button lint, and I remember, most of all, the transition into being a little more comfortable with my body, and allowing my armpits and legs to bare the hair that grew naturally in those places.

Today, I practice simple grooming, still appearing "kept" on most days. I'm so glad that I can laugh at a toe hair and a small pimple. I'm okay with the fact that I sweat like crazy (toxin myth debunked!). And just like Mara, I find the greatest satisfaction in pulling out those pesky ingrown hairs.

・・・
Shout out to @bayaniart for their important work to raise awareness and consciousness on the daily.

And now...we are one day away. Saturday classes begin tomorrow; Monday is the first day of school for all new and returning CCSF students.
We hope we have been helpful over the past month, providing updates and - hopefully - inspiring people to sign up for courses that are threatened with cancellation. We also hope we have brought more attention to the issue of downsizing and corporatization happening in higher education. Continue to follow us as we share more about this issue and how it is negatively impacting the presence of marginalized communities in higher Ed - as students, in course offerings, in institutional leadership.
We will share the public GoogleDoc through Wednesday next week. If you'd like to be a part of this work, please DM us.

  • It’s #FeatureFriday folks! This week we’re highlighting our #ralagal Andy Renison (@andybobandy_) who has been on #teamrala for more than 4 years, making her one of our most dedicated employees (she actually started with us back at @rerunsboutique😱) “Wowza" as Andy puts it! This powerhouse recently graduated‍‍‍ from UTK with a major in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Public Health👩🏻‍🎓 While working at Rala and going to school, Andy was an undergraduate research assistant for the Social Action Research Team, and External Affairs Coordinator for Sexual Empowerment and Awareness at Tennessee (SEAT). She is considering nursing school as her next step, hoping to eventually land in community health and sexual health education💞 Her spare time is spent taking care of her plant babes, and playing with her adorable nieces #auntie!
Andy uses her sweet horticultural talent to keep all the plants at our shop alive and thriving🌿 She’s also our resident proofreader/print editor for our Rala newsletters and her #mariekondoing skills keep us super organized👏
So proud to know this woman and have her on our team💪⭐️

  • Just finished reading Cathy J. Cohen's research article, "Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential for Queer Politics?" after having seen @ihartericka recommended it in their stories the other day, and let me tell ya - it is definitely worth the read.
.
The section I highlighted and featured above really stood out for me as it it expanded upon my own perceptions of queer-politics in ways that I definitely recognize in my own politics, but admittedly don't think critically enough about.
.
The dichotomy, or the binary, between those deemed queer and those deemed heterosexual isn't as cut and dry as it appears to be, as heteronormativity impacts everyone, just in different ways.
.
Cohen goes on to give examples of this: "For instance, how would queer activists understand politically the lives of women - in particular women of color - on welfare, who may fit into the category of heterosexual, but whose sexual choices are not perceived as normal, moral, or worthy of state support?"
.
Essentially, Cohen is asking that while LGBTQ+ activists may recognize that heteronormativity is a system of power that structures our lives, how are we actively working against how it also intersects and interacts with institutional racism, class exploitation, and the patriarchy? And are we working with those who are also impacted by heteronormativity at these intersections to destabilize these power structures that are oppressing us all?
.
Even today we still see this dichotomy in mainstream queer spaces. The lack of inclusionary politics, and over-abundance of *single-identity* politics, isn't enough to upend these systems. I mean, queer people are still being excluded and further oppressed at some of our *own* tables due to racism, ableism, and even our own internalized homophobia, so how are we ever going to be free from the confines of heteronormative power structures if we don't do the work that is necessary to be true allies and accomplices to one another?
.
If you're interested in reading more I've linked to a free pdf of the article in my bio, or a quick Google search will yield the same results. Thanks again @ihartericka for sharing! #brwreads Just finished reading Cathy J. I also have a specialization in Feminist/Women’s Studies. I very much enjoy being involved in young peoples’ education and helping them develop their potential. Other than that, I love to travel and do it as much as I can, just like I enjoy staying at home watching movies.” Gabrielle: Junior Program Officer, Women’s Program and Regional Operations Pronouns: she/her ___________________________________________________________________ « Je suis une étudiante à la maîtrise en développement international et mondialisation à l’Université d’Ottawa.
