  • 18 July is Nelson Mandela International Day. Let's pay tribute today to those who fought and continue to fight for freedom, dignity and human rights. This struggle has never been more important in societies today that are weakened by rising and multiple tensions -- economic, social, political as well as climatic.

More than ever, we must renew our commitment to the values of Nelson Mandela, a great humanist defender of the oppressed, who also honoured UNESCO as a Goodwill Ambassador, in order to build societies where every woman and man can live together in diversity and respect.

  • Peace. That's all we want. All we need. After all, that's UNESCO's main goal: to build peace in the minds of women and men. It may seem simple. It may even look naive. But just take look around for a second. Check the news. Read about how things are going around the World. Don't you think that, perhaps more than ever before, what we urgently need is peace?

This is not an empty word. By peace we mean the absence of conflict...but not only. By peace we also mean equal opportunities for everyone regardless of their origin and gender. By peace we mean access to quality education for all, the use of the full potential of human and natural sciences to advance on sustainable development and to help us tackle the challenges of our time. By peace we mean protecting our heritage and traditions, fostering people's creativity, empowering youth to develop their full potential and making sure freedom of expression and access to information are respected and enacted. That's what peace looks like to us.

In the end, let's admit it, #WorldEmojiDay is just a tiny excuse to talk about this. An occasion to remind ourselves of the most important goal we all need to work and contribute for: Peace.

Help us spread the message.

Help us build peace in the minds of women and men 🕊️✌️☮️.

  • All I want is an equal chance, the same as everyone else.

Head down.
Serious.

Rachidatou Sana concentrates on getting her answer exactly right. She is 11 years old and comes from Burkina Faso. Already an outstanding pupil at Kua C school in Bobo-Dioulasso, she loves mathematical problem-solving. But she will have to find her own solution in the fight to keep on with her studies.

Like many girls her age in Burkina Faso, Rachidatou was born to poor parents. Her mother illiterate. Rachidatou is daily torn between home chores, earning a living and studying to better her situation. She plans to go to college to train as a nurse 'so I can help others and my family.' For many others like Rachidatou education is a ladder out of poverty and provides hope and a chance for a better future. But if we continue business as usual, there will still be 220 million children and youth out of school in 2030.

Investing in education means investing in our future. Urgent action is needed.

  • Take a quick look out of the window to enjoy this beautiful view! Tranquil tarns, craggy mountains, glistening lakes, drystone walls and deep green fells. Today's stop is in the #LakeDistrict national park, located in the Northwest of England by the Scottish border.

Shaped by glaciers in the Ice Age, the area bears testimony to the centuries-long harmonious relationship between local communities and this beautiful piece of land. Its unique culture of communal hill-farming lies at the heart of this captivating area to this day and has shaped the landscape for hundreds of years.

The photo above was taken from a Bothy, a rustic shelter found across England and Scotland's mountainous regions, and features the jaw-dropping view of Buttermere, one of the region's many lakes, from Warnscale Head. The Warnscale bothy, built in the 1750s for a local slate mine, is easily camouflaged in the surrounding landscapes.

The Lake District has inspired the literary minds of great British writers such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and keeps enthralling visitors as one of the UK’s most favourite national parks today.⁣ Did you like this? • The cultural landscape of Budj Bim (Australia) within the Country of the Gundijmara, an Australian aboriginal nation, is now part of the World Heritage List. So is the Canadian site Writing-on-Stone / Áísínai’pi, whose landscape is considered sacred to the Blackfoot (Siksikáítsitapi) people, who perpetuate their centuries-old traditions through ceremonies and respect for places. The knowledge, actions and experience of indigenous peoples are essential for the preservation of our common cultural and natural heritage. For this reason, indigenous representatives from all regions of the world, including - for the first time - the Arctic region, are also taking part in the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee, held until 10 July in Baku, Azerbaijan. This participation, which coincides with the International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019, is to be welcomed

  • “Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly” - Frida Kahlo. 6 July marks the 112th anniversary of the birthday of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. She was an artist who explored the female psyche with immense bravery and imagination, undaunted by excruciating physical handicaps.

Frida Kahlo mostly painted self-portraits and her art was inspired by Mexican popular culture. After her death in 1954, aged only 47, Kahlo’s work remained quite unknown until the 1970s, when art historians and political activists rediscovered it. Today, Frida Kahlo is considered one of the major forces in the 20th century art.

On the anniversary of her birthday, we pay tribute to a life devoted to art and political struggle.
